MetSource partnered in providing an alloy solution that exhibits improved strength at elevated temperatures allowing our customer to improve process efficiencies and increase profits.
METSOURCE PRODUCTS IN ACTION:
The Kanthal® APMT™ Reaction Tube was produced as a rolled and welded tube, 18″ outer diameter and nearly 14 feet long. The ease of forming and weldability of the APMT® alloy allowed fabrication of the large reaction tube in the superior metallurgical alloy providing an engineered solution for our customer.

Our customer’s R&D had developed a new proprietary process for producing high purity chemical powders. The new process parameters and increased temperatures in their reaction vessel caused several alloy failure mechanisms to occur. These failures included corrosion, creep and thermal fatigue failures creating significant challenges for finding a suitable alloy. Our customer tested several traditional alloy systems as well as high alloy, austenitic nickel-chromium based superalloys that all resulted in premature failure. The inability to find an alloy was jeopardizing our customer’s path forward with their newly developed chemical powder production process.
Fabricated Reaction Vessel out of Kanthal® APMT™ alloy
THE METSOURCE SOLUTION
MetSource, partnered with our Manufacturer, offered a solution in the form of an advanced superalloy, Kanthal® APMT™. A registered trademark of Sandvik Group, Kanthal® grade APMT™ is a FeCrAIMo superalloy that offers excellent resistance to creep, oxidation, and corrosion by the formation of a dense and stable Al2O3 protective outer layer. This alumina oxide layer allows the material to withstand temperatures up to 1425°C (2600°F) and maintain significant creep-rupture strengths up to 1,100°C (2010°F).
The alumina oxide protective layer offers superior corrosion and oxidation resistance representing a stable alloy resistant to carbon and sulphur atmospheres. Also, very importantly, this protective layer prevents spalling of the base material. This is crucial in eliminating contamination of the base material into any process especially in the case of this chemical powder final product.
Kanthal® APMT™ offers high temperature creep resistance due to dispersion strengthening. This alloy strengthening mechanism provides high impact strength and a well-defined creep rate enabling a predictable design life.
Furthermore, Kanthal® APM™ and APMT™ alloys provide design flexibility being fully formable and weldable coupled with a predictable design life offers many options for Engineers designing new products or looking for improved service life of existing products.
